Back in 2007, I began to lay the groundwork for what would become 'Tangled Poise.' My inspiration partly stemmed from the printmaking designs I created during my college years, with a desire to someday transfer them onto fabric. However, the true origin of my inspiration to fiber art can be traced back to a story from my childhood. My mother once showed me a tangled mass of blue yarn, teaching me that with patience, even chaos can be transformed into beauty. This lesson has stayed with me, shaping my journey through the world of fiber art. 'Tangled Poise' especially resonates with me now. With each piece, I strive to unravel the intricate tapestry of human emotions, often employing recycled materials that bring with them tales of yesteryears. There are times when I contemplate where I truly belong – is it in the past, the present, or the future? Yet, I hold onto the hope that a day will come when these temporal planes will coexist harmoniously within me. Until that day, my dedication to crafting 'Tangled Poise' remains unwavering.
Art making as a social activity has been fundamental to the work of Kaori T. Natsume for years. However, she now wishes to explore the boundaries between the personal and the social through "Tangled Poise", which begins with deeply personal stories. Just as one might find it almost impossible to escape from the grasp of Buddha's hand, many feel it's an immense challenge to free ourselves from the emotions held by our ancestors, especially those of our mothers. Given that a mother's presence can be as encompassing as a god or the universe for a child, this is somewhat inevitable. In the vast tapestry of history, how can we transform the emotional legacy of mothers who have worried about the world? Through "Tangled Poise", the aim is not only to materialize these sentiments into fiber art but also to find ways to elevate the emotional significance that led to the creation of such works.
Beautiful Debris features the work of Sandye Renz and Kaori T. Natsume. The exhibit delves into some of the artists' memories, scary or cherished, and what they create with them.
Sandye has always worried about the mountains of debris. Can you crochet it into a basket? Can you use it for trim on a rug of the ocean? Can you put it in a pocket? Why don't women's clothes have enough pockets? She just wants to make things better and beautiful.
Kaori recalls at the age of three her mother's tangled blue yarn and her words: "With diligence, any knot can be unraveled." To Kaori, this yarn mirrors the complexities of human connections. When simple threads and scraps come together to form unexpected beauty, Kaori, as the creator, feels profoundly fulfilled.
Every Saturday in November, from 1-5pm, Sandye will remedy the lack of adequate pockets with "The Pocket Project." She invites visitors to bring items that need pockets and she will sew on pockets using a selection of available fabrics, or you can bring your own.
Repeats every week every Saturday until Sat Nov 25 2023.
Saturday, November 4th 2023 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

Stories intertwined with thread and vintage clothing, known only to myself and those who gifted them to me. I find joy in seeing these deeply personal tales and emotions transform into a new form.
Ah, that's Thai silk thread; that's from Kyoto; that's from Yuki, and that's from New Zealand... I reminisce with each individual element I see.
I love the process of matching colors. Beyond the individual backstories of each, the texture, thread thickness, and color all intertwine in an exhilarating, improvisational journey.
The act of freely placing threads, fleece, and scraps, as my heart dictates, feels much like meditation, bringing a sense of peace to my soul.
The results rarely turn out as I anticipate. Yet, the unexpected moments when I think, 'Oh, this is actually great!' give me a thrill akin to finding an unexpected note inside a cherished book.
